Touch is one of the most important ways you and your kitty can communicate, but few people can name more parts of a cat\u2019s paw<\/strong> beyond the claws and toes, so here\u2019s a top-to-bottom review of your kitty\u2019s paws!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carpal Pad<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This tiny pad of skin on your kitty\u2019s leg above the paw is called the cat<\/strong> carpal pad<\/strong>, and even big cats have them! That tiny part of cat paws without fur<\/strong> has skin that can be white, pink, black, brown or a combination of colors. While it may seem unnecessary, and in indoor cats is usually free of calluses, it provides extra traction when jumping down<\/a> or moving downhill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While our next feature is similar to a thumb, there\u2019s no exact analog for the cat carpal pad<\/strong> in people!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dewclaw<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While a dewclaw might sound like something a mythical creature would have, it turns out cats are magical enough to have them, too! The dewclaw is the toe and attached claw forming your cat\u2019s \u201cthumb.\u201d Your cat\u2019s dewclaw isn\u2019t as helpful as it is in some other animals<\/a>, although it does sometimes aid in climbing or balancing,  it still has one key use. Your cat uses their dewclaw to get a good hold on their toys<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Metacarpal and metatarsal pads<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cpalm\u201d of your cat\u2019s forelegs, another part of cat paws without fur<\/strong>, is called the metacarpal pad, but on the hindlegs, it has a different name: metatarsal! The pads in the center of your cat\u2019s paws <\/strong>are hairless, and they may even sweat when your kitty is hot or nervous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humans also have a metatarsal pad located just behind our toes, forming the \u201cball\u201d of our feet! But, how many pads does a cat have<\/strong>? They have five pads plus the little carpal pad <\/strong>we discussed above!  Just as you would expect, these four soft landing pads not only help cats to walk, run, and jump, but also make safe landings. Surprisingly, studies have shown<\/a> that the front metacarpal pads are paw parts <\/strong>that play a role in how skillfully your kitty lands!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there\u2019s a part of the cat paw anatomy<\/strong> you wouldn\u2019t expect to be so important to movement\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Toes! Cats are actually evolved to walk on certain parts of a paw<\/strong>: their toes, making them digitigrades<\/a> like dinosaurs, birds, and yes, even dogs. These cute little beans at the end of the cat’s paws<\/strong> support their weight while walking, similar to when children sneak around on their tiptoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ability to move silently on their toes aids hunting, but it would be nothing without the sharp tips at the end of the cat\u2019s paw anatomy<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claws<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The cat paw claws<\/strong> at the tip of your cat\u2019s pads are probably your LEAST favorite parts of a cat\u2019s paw<\/strong>, but they are vital to your cat\u2019s ability to move. They aren\u2019t just for scratching up the furniture! During jumping or sprinting, the claws give traction to your cat\u2019s largely smooth paws. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


Similarly, they help your kitty squeeze their toys, especially when they\u2019re digging their back paws into kicker toys<\/a>! And a special subset of kitties has extra claws!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small minority of cats display polydactylism, which can cause them to have more than four claws (and of course toes) on some paws, or even to have dewclaws on their hind legs! <\/p>\n\n\n\n
